What if you Don't Want to Upgrade to Windows 11 and Don't Want to Shift to Zorin?
For Windows 10, you can use the Microsoft Defender built into the operating system for free, or consider paid third-party options like Bitdefender, Norton, or Malwarebytes Premium for more advanced features and protection against newer threats like ransomware. Free options like Avira Free Antivirus and TotalAV are also available if you want a dedicated solution beyond Defender.
Built-in Option
Microsoft Defender: This is Windows 10's pre-installed, free antivirus software. It provides essential protection against malware and has consistently performed well in real-world tests. It's a good choice for users with lower-risk online behavior or those who don't want to download separate software.
Paid Options
Bitdefender
Often cited as a top choice, it's excellent for real-time protection and offers a good balance of features and performance.
Norton
Known for its comprehensive security features, Norton is a strong choice, especially for users who want to pay for a broader range of security tools.
Malwarebytes Premium
While the free version offers on-demand scanning, the paid version provides proactive, real-time protection against advanced threats like ransomware.
Surfshark Antivirus
Offers strong protection with a VPN and other features, making it a good all-in-one security solution.
Free Alternatives
Avira Free Antivirus:
Provides award-winning protection, real-time updates, and is light on system resources, making it a good free alternative to Defender.
TotalAV
A simple and effective free option that also offers features for optimizing your PC's performance.
How to Choose
- Basic Protection - Microsoft Defender is sufficient for many users.
- Advanced Protection - Paid options like Bitdefender or Norton offer more robust defenses against cutting-edge threats.
- Additional Features - If you need features like identity protection or a VPN, look for bundles like Aura or Surfshark.
Comparison of Windows and Zorin OS
|
Feature |
Windows OS ( 10/11) |
Zorin OS (Linux-based) |
|
Primary
Cost |
Typically Paid (often
pre-installed, or a license purchase). |
Free (Core/Lite
editions) or a Paid Pro version for extra features. |
|
User Interface |
Highly
familiar to most computer users globally. |
Highly
customizable, with a "Zorin Appearance" app to mimic Windows or
macOS layouts (great for switchers). |
|
Software/App
Availability |
Industry-leading
compatibility with proprietary and professional software (e.g., Adobe,
Microsoft Office, specialized business apps). |
Vast library of free
and open-source software. Can run many Windows apps using compatibility
layers like Wine/Bottles, but compatibility is not guaranteed. |
|
Gaming |
Best
performance and widest compatibility for AAA games and all major gaming
platforms (Steam, Epic, etc.). |
Greatly
improved via Steam Play (Proton) and other tools, but performance and day-one
support can still be inconsistent compared to Windows. |
|
Hardware
& Drivers |
Excellent,
near-universal support for new and old hardware; most manufacturers
prioritize Windows drivers. |
Very good, especially
for general-purpose hardware. May occasionally require more manual setup for
very new or niche hardware. |
|
Performance/System Requirements |
Generally
requires higher system resources and may become sluggish on older or low-end
hardware. |
Very fast and
efficient, especially the Lite edition. Excellent for reviving older PCs. |
|
Security
& Privacy |
Primary target for
viruses and malware; built-in telemetry raises privacy concerns. Requires
robust third-party security software. |
Inherently more secure
and resistant to viruses due to its architecture. Privacy-respecting with no
personal data collection by the OS itself. |
|
Learning Curve |
Low (if
already familiar with Windows). |
Low for basic
use (designed for Windows/macOS switchers), but moderate for advanced
troubleshooting or customization (using the Terminal). |
